Facebook, the company which started its journey from a Harvard dorm room, is now a worldwide phenomenon. Facebook, headquartered in Menlo Park, CA, started its journey in 2004, and now it's a company with total assets of around $50 B. Facebook Newsroom reports, the social networking platform has more than 1.79 B monthly active users (September 30, 2016). Over the years, the company has acquired numerous promising companies. Others have tried time and again to snatch the top spot from Facebook, but have failed miserably in the end. Facebook remains the number one social networking site. People love Facebook so much that, to many, logging into Facebook and checking the updates from friends, colleagues, and relatives or updating status have become an essential daily activity, something they cannot live without. An average smartphone user checks Facebook 14 times every single day. The platform takes good care of its users. It frequently updates the site and launches interesting features to entertain existing users and attract new users.
Facebook is a social networking platform which by design loves to cover all the important events of a user's life. Unfortunately, death is an important event of a person's life. Human life begins its journey in this world when a baby takes birth and sees the world for the first time. The baby grows gradually passing through childhood, teenage, adulthood and in every phase the person's understanding of its surroundings and the world improves. After adulthood, old age comes to a person's life. This is the phase a person must enjoy peacefully, without any regrets from the past or worries about the future, and then, in the end, death comes to take a person to the realm of eternal peace. All our pleasures, all our sufferings, all our friendships, all our enmities, all our hopes, all our regrets end in death, which is why many call it the greatest leveler. In death, we are all equal. We all hate death, yet every life has to end eventually. How does the number one social networking platform of the world handle this last event of a person's life? Let's find out.
Facebook handles the process in a very satisfactory manner, which shows the respect the platform has for its users. A person can tell Facebook in advance whether they want to permanently delete their account or they want to memorialize their account. In the case of memorialized accounts, the word "Remembering" will appear next to the person's name on their profile. If the privacy settings of the profile allows it, friends will be able to share memories on the memorialized timeline. If the person has shared photos, posts, and other content that will remain available on FB in conformance with the privacy settings of the account. No one is allowed to log into a memorialized account and these accounts do not appear in friend suggestions, advertisements, or birthday reminders. No changes can be made to memorialized accounts without a legacy contact. The Legacy Contact option can be accessed in the Security Settings section. The legacy contact takes care of the account after a user passes away. Pages of a sole admin whose account has been memorialized are removed from FB, when a valid request is received. Alternately, a person can choose to permanently delete their Facebook account when they pass away. This option too is set up from the Legacy Contact option. For friends and family, Facebook recommends creating a group to share the memories of the deceased person. This approach to handling deceased users shows thoughtfulness of the FB team and how much valuable each user is to Facebook.
