YouTube, world's largest video-sharing network, has over one billion users. YouTube reaches more under-50 audience than any cable network in the US. YouTube has a design which gets users addicted easily. You can rarely stop after watching a single video. It has autoplay, theater mode, speed and quality options, full-screen mode, and engaging conversations. YouTube's autoplay starts the next video in the up next queue as soon as the current video finishes. The theater mode allows users to view a video in a wide frame with a black background. Speed (0.25 to 2) and quality (144p to 1080p and beyond) options let users see videos in their preferred speed and quality. Full-screen mode is a favorite of users. YouTube comments section is a place where users participate in interesting conversations.
A complaint raised by many YouTube users is the cognitive overload. People do not like a cluttered user interface all the time. It creates stress on users and last time we checked, no one likes stress. When a person gets home at night, they want to enjoy videos in a distraction free interface. People are getting tired of being bombarded with content they did not ask for. It's difficult for a platform to give people only what they asked for and nothing else. The reason is a platform wants users to stay on the platform as long as possible. If the platform fails to distract users to other items, in this case, videos, the user will leave whenever they have got what they wanted. It's difficult for YouTube to provide users a distraction free interface. Theater mode works but it is neither very popular nor very useful in getting a one hundred percent distraction free environment. Full-screen mode is a lot better, but it too does not work well in low and medium bandwidth connections. The video becomes highly pixelated and viewing a video becomes a torture to the eyes.
To address the shortcomings of YouTube, stefanvd from Belgium, has developed a chrome extension aptly named Turn Off the Lights. With the extension installed, when you watch a video, clicking on the lamp icon on the extension bar will fade the entire page to dark, giving you a cinema hall like experience. Clicking again on the lamp icon will bring the page back to normal. The open source project has attracted a lot of praise from general people and experts. YouTube is not the only site supported by the extension. It supports many other popular online video watching platforms such as Vimeo, Metacafe, Dailymotion etc. The options page lets you customize important aspects of the extension. You can select the opacity of the darkness on a scale of 0 to 100. 80 is the default value. If you want some variety and want some other color instead of black you can select that, although we recommend black. You can change the background image and add a dynamic background. The extension offers ten stunning dynamic backgrounds.
The days of getting stressed by a thousand unwanted onscreen items while watching a music video on YouTube will soon become a thing of the past as use of Turn Off the Lights is soaring. TOTL has more than 5 M users. If you are a fan, feel free to make a small contribution.
