On December 10, 2014, BitTorrent announced project Maelstrom's invite-only alpha on its official blog. The purpose of the project was to build a decentralized web. The post said that Maelstrom was going to be a "web browser that can power a new way for web content to be published, accessed and consumed." Its aim was altruistic, to put the power of the internet in the hands of people. The present architecture of the internet is centralized, at multiple levels. Our private life is not so private, at least not to the big corporations. There is a limited oversight on corporations that handle personal data of billions of internet users. On April 10, 2015, Maelstrom entered beta. At that point, the project had over 10,000 developers and a developer toolset. The beta version had interesting features such as DHT visualization. That means when you clicked on a magnet link in Maelstrom, you could see how the file is searched in the peer-to-peer internet in a stunning real-time animation. The beta version is unavailable now. The concept of a people-powered web was at the core of project Maelstrom. People admired the beta version. In September, 2015, subtitle support was added to Maelstrom media player. The browser could play media files while downloading. The users did not have to wait for the entire download to finish.
Fast forward to now and the browser is not available for download on the official site. We decided to search for it in other places. Finally, we found it on softpedia.com. The version is 44.0.1.3 beta and size is 38.1 MB. The 42.0.1.36 beta version is available on uptodown.com and the 37.0.2.7 beta version is available on findmysoft.com.The installation was smooth. It pinned the program on the taskbar. The settings section is very similar to concurrent chrome versions, as it is based on chromium. It has a torrent settings section where you can play with streaming cache size, sharing settings, proxy settings, and more. In the about section, if you try to get help with using Maelstrom, you will reach a dead page. It uses bing.com by Trovi as default search engine. We went to the ubuntu alternative downloads page to test torrent download process on it. We selected Ubuntu 17.04 Desktop (32-bit) for download. The torrent started right in the browser. Apart from that, it didn't seem to have any other impressive feature.
It appears that the project has been put in cold storage for now. That's the official situation. It won't be too wrong to assume that Maelstrom is dead although there has been no official announcement from BitTorrent. In the Maelstrom section of the BitTorrent forums, there are posts enquiring the status of the project with no replies. We will probably never know for sure but the corporation's poor financial condition around the time might be the cause. People of the internet started seeing Maelstrom as a weapon in the battle against net neutrality. It offered torrent-based website hosting, which had the potential to change the root and core of the internet. Let's hope Maelstrom will make a come back, in one form or another.
