#111-How to Add Google Analytics to a Chrome Extension

Google Chrome is the world's most popular browser. The data from gs.statcounter.com shows that Google Chrome's market share worldwide is around 180% of the combined market share of five of its competitors. In the coming years, its popularity is only going to increase. The best way to monetize the vast user base of Chrome is through Chrome extensions. Enterprises, small, medium, and large understand the incredible value that a Chrome extension can add to a business. From customer acquisition to brand promotion, Chrome extensions can be used for a number of purposes. It is not uncommon for businesses to publish its Chrome extension even before publishing its iOS and Android apps. When you launch a software product, users will get it, install it and interact with it. You can rely on ratings and reviews, feedback forms, and forums etc. to understand how users feel about the product but they rarely give the full picture. You need to know exactly how a user interacts with your software product. The same rule applies to Chrome extensions. You need to know how many times the popup is opened i.e how many times popup.html is viewed. You need to know how many times a button is clicked. You need to see the full picture. In short, you need analytics. In this article, our experts are going to teach you how you can add Google Analytics to your Chrome extension.

You will need a Google Analytics account. Sign in to your account. During account set up use the extension site URL if it has one, otherwise, use your corporate site URL, or any other value in the website's URL field. If you don't have a site for your extension, you can get one at $25 only (this is discounted price for the readers of this blog only, please mention promo code CRXSITE to avail the offer, the offer is valid for the first one thousand orders). The second step is tracking code installation. To do this, copy this code, how-to-add-google-analytics-to-a-chrome-extension-tracking-code-installation.js and paste into popup.js that is loaded by popup.html. The code will track no. of times popup.html is viewed. In order for the code to work, the default content security policy needs to be relaxed. This is the third step. To do this, copy this code, how-to-add-google-analytics-to-a-chrome-extension-content-security-policy-relaxation.json and paste into manifest.json. Now, you can track how many times the popup is opened i.e. popup.html page views. In Google Analytics, you can check real-time page views in reports, real-time, overview. You might want to track how many times a user clicks a button on popup.html. Let's assume you have a buy now button on your popup that takes the user to your online store where they can make a purchase and here is the code of the button in popup.html, how-to-add-google-analytics-to-a-chrome-extension-buy-button.html. If you want to track the no. of times this button is clicked copy this code, how-to-add-google-analytics-to-a-chrome-extension-track-buy-now-button-clicks.js and paste into popup.js. If you see that tracking code is not working in popup.js, put the code in a separate file, for instance, popup-ga.js, as sometimes the existing code in popup.js can interfere with the tracking code, and then include the file in popup.html, how-to-add-google-analytics-to-a-chrome-extension-popup-ga.html.

If you have a Chrome extension and you want to add Google Analytics to it to better understand how your users interact with it, we will be more than happy to help you. Our team has developed Chrome extensions for clients from all parts of the globe. You don't have to worry about tracking code installation, page view tracking implementation, button click tracking implementation, all the annoying google analytics bugs, or anything else. All you need to do is send us a message, and we will take care of the rest.
