We received a lot of requests to review Wireshark 2.2.0 in the last few weeks. For those who don't know, Wireshark is a stunning network analyzer software which is a favorite of network administrators, network analysts, security professionals, & penetration testers for years. In the words of Behrouz A. Forouzan, "In addition of being an indispensable tool for network administrators, Wireshark is a valuable tool for protocol developers, who may use it to debug protocol implementations." It was our pleasure to review the latest version of this magnificent and highly acclaimed software.
Before we go to the review, we would like to mention some interesting facts about Wireshark. Wireshark is available for both Unix and Windows. It is an open source software released under GNU General Public License. The original project started in 1998 and since then the software has received numerous awards and accolades. The original author of Wireshark is Gerald Combs and over the years, a lot of really brilliant people have made interesting contributions to the project. The software has a rich feature set which ranges from "Deep inspection of hundreds of protocols" to "
Rich VoIP analysis" and beyond. Wireshark's former name was Ethereal. The name was changed in 2006. If you are serious about Wireshark then you must check out Wireshark University, which was co-founded by Laura Chappell, an eminent Wireshark expert, consultant, and instructor. Wireshark University offers training, certifications, and study materials. We must also mention SharkFest. SharkFest is "an annual educational conference focused on sharing knowledge, experience and best practices among members of the Wireshark global developer and user communities." SharkFest 2016 was held on June 13 to 16 in Computer History Museum, Mountain View, CA.
Now, let's begin. We tested the software on Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. The machine has Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5300 @ 2.60 GHz 2.60 GHz and 4.00 GB RAM. The size of the downloaded file (Wireshark-win32-2.2.0.exe) was 42.7 MB. The installation process was fast and smooth. We installed the complete package. We provided affirmative responses to questions at the time of installation. After the installation was done, we launched the software. The welcome screen has a wonderful user interface.
Packet capturing worked perfectly. Wireshark provides the option to save the captured file for use in future. Wireshark also makes understanding incoming and outgoing frame identification very easy. For a frame, if the "Source" column in the packet list pane shows the address of the host, then the frame is outgoing, and if the "Destination" column in the packet list pane shows the address of the host, the frame is incoming. The Wireshark has this amazing "Display Filter" which is very useful in weeding out unwanted information. The "Display Filter" also comes with auto-completion feature which makes the filter even more awesome.
The software has a wonderful user interface and years of contributions from the finest network experts has converted the software into a real gem. We would be doing injustice to this wonderful piece of software if we gave this software anything below five stars out of five. In this article, we tested the software's basic features. We will explore the software in more depth soon.
