#94-Black Menu for Google Chrome Extension Version 14.5.1 Review: 40% Feature-Rich 30% Incomplete 30% Unnecessary

Black Menu for Google (BMFG) is a chrome extension from Carlos Jeurissen which aims to improve user experience on chrome by providing users quick and convenient access to Google's ever-expanding universe of services. When installed it takes users to a welcome page on the developer site which guides the user on how to get started. The welcome page also offers the option to contact the developer. To use the extension, you need to click on the extension's button on the extension bar. This opens a popup which gives you access to all the necessary services from Google. You don't even have to leave the page you are on. The search box (search service is selected by default), for instance, allows you to search anything on Google. The results are displayed in the pop-up. The search box has autocomplete feature which assists the user. One problem we noticed (version 14.5.1) was that the extension does not save the results. So, if you open the popup and search a phrase and then click somewhere on the page outside the popup, it will close and when you reopen, the results will be gone. Similarly, the last used service is also not saved. Search service comes with ALL, IMAGES, BOOKS, & MORE. In addition to the Search, other google services offered are, Google+, Translate, Maps, YouTube, News, Gmail, Drive, Calendar, & Keep. The user can add additional services from Google such as Analytics, Developers, Payments etc. Gmail, Drive, Calendar, & Keep require user permission. You can also check google notifications from the BMFG popup. The grid button on top-right opens google's service shortcut tray's BMFG version.

We found that although the extension allows the user to open the currently selected service on a new tab by clicking on the new tab button which is on the right of the search box, it does not take the input i.e. if you have translated the word "home" from English to some other language, and then you open the translate service in a new tab, the translate service will open but it will not have the input and the output(s). You can open BMFG on a new tab or as a separate panel by right clicking on the extension button. Extension Settings offer you options to send your questions, feature requests, and bug reports to the developer. You can make a donation too. The extension sends anonymous usage data by default which can be turned off on the settings page. You can read the privacy policy on the official site. The extension adds a menu item to the on page right click menu which allows easy bookmarking, mailing, sharing, and web page address shortening, more popularly known as url shortening.

The extension does offer some cool features but it still lacks many required features. The extension offers old wines in new bottle. The question we may ask is why should we install an extension when we can simply go to the google service home page in the current tab or in a new tab. The extension will not offer any significant value to people who use the internet frequently and search hundreds or thousands of phrases on google services daily.

#77-Cleverbot AI Review: Not Bad for an AI

Launched in 2006, Cleverbot has attracted a lot of attention for its amusing nature in the last few years. Cleverbot is an AI which chats with you like a human, well, almost like a human. The site has a global Alexa rank 41,348 and the US rank 16,232. Cleverbot seems to have a few sister projects although none of them are very interesting, which is probably why  cleverbot.com  has a 71.00% bounce rate (71.00% visitors to cleverbot.com navigate away from the site after viewing only one page). There are three buttons below the chat box labeled, "think about it", "think for me", and "thoughts so far". None of these three are very intuitive or useful. The sandwich button at the right of the chat box offers some useful options. When the bot has loaded but no conversation has taken place, you will see only two options in the sandwich menu, the option to change the language and the option to continue the conversation next visit. The default language is English....
